The CW Picks Up Vampire Diaries

The CW has picked up a pilot based on L.J. Smith's "Vampire Diaries" series of books, reports Variety.

"Vampire Diaries" comes from Alloy Entertainment, the same company whose past book series led to the Dub's series "Gossip Girl" and "Privileged."

Originally published in 1993, "Vampire Diaries" revolves around a young woman whose torn between two vampire brothers. The brothers -- one good, one evil -- are battling for her soul, and the souls of her pals, family and the small town where they live.

The CW has reunited with Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer and "Dawson's Creek" writer Kevin Williamson to executive produce and write. Julie Plec ("Kyle XY") is also on board to write and executive produce.

Warner Bros. TV, where Alloy (which owns the rights to "Vampire Diaries") is set up, is the studio; Alloy's Les Morgenstein and Bob Levy are also executive producers.

Since “Twilight” proved, beyond any trace of doubt, that vampire stories were hip again and, what’s most important, performed wonderfully at the box-office and with the public, CW is bringing one such story to television as well. “Vampire Diaries” will not star teen heartthrob Robert Pattinson, but it will get a male lead just as talented and good looking in Ian Somerhalder.

Ian, who played Boone on the ABC hit show “Lost,” has just been attached to the new project that will target a much younger segment of the audience, Variety informs. His good looks and seemingly innocent expression will be exploited in the new series not only as an audience magnet, it has been revealed, but also to confuse viewers and play upon the character’s duality.

“Somerhalder is set to play Damon, a smug vampire who can go from playful to evil in a split second.” Variety reports. “Also joining the cast are Zach Roerig (‘Friday Night Lights’), who will play the jock Matt, and Kayla Ewell (‘Entourage’), who will play Matt’s sister. Previously announced cast includes Nina Dobrev and Steven R. McQueen. ‘Vampire Diaries,’ based on a series of books from Alloy Entertainment, centers on a woman who falls for two vampire brothers – one good and one evil. Warner Bros. TV is behind the project, along with Alloy and Outerbanks Ent.” the aforementioned publication further reveals.

With Ian most likely taking up the part of the evil vampire brother, movie bloggers are already beginning to compare him with Pattinson, whom he would closely resemble, the only difference being that one will be famous on TV, while the other one on the silver screen. However, before anyone jumps to any comparisons, one might as well add that CW has not yet announced a release date for the vampire series, and the production is not even certain to have started.

In other vampire-related news, “New Moon,” the sequel to “Twilight,” is now shooting, with small hindrances like Pattinson’s head injury. While nothing of great concern, the British actor was injured on set, as a piece of metal became loose and hit the star in the back of the head, sending him to the ground. Pattinson was carried to his hotel room and told to rest for a couple of hours, and is now supposedly back up and running, working on the film.

Ian Somerhalder in neuer Serie "Vampire Diaries"

Ian Somerhalder, der in "Lost" die Rolle des Boone spielte, wird Teil der neuen CW Serie "Vampire Diaries". In der Drama Serie wird Sommerhalder Damon spielen, einen Vampir, der blitzschnell seine Stimmung zum Boesen aendern kann.

Neben Somerhalder werden auch Zach Roerig (Friday Night Lights), Kayla Ewell (Entourage), Nina Dobrev und Steven R. McQueen in "Vampire Diaries", welches auf einer Buchreihe basiert, zu sehen sein.

Im Mittelpunkt der Serie steht eine Frau, welche sich in zwei Vampirbrueder verliebt, einer von ihnen ist gut, der andere boese.

Paul Wesley joins 'Vampire Diaries'

Paul Wesley is set to star opposite Nina Dobrev in CW's drama pilot "Vampire Diaries."

Based on the Alloy novels, WBTV's "Vampire" centers on Elena (Dobrev), a tragic heroine who is the object of passion for two vampire brothers, Stefan (Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder).

Stefan is described as "gloriously, amazingly, epically beautiful young man" who is actually a 200-year-old vampire who has a strong connection with Elena.

Wesley's series credits include arcs on "24," "Everwood," "Army Wives" and "American Dreams."

Helmers set for 'Beautiful Life,' 'Body Politic,' 'Vampire Diaries'

In CW pilot directing news, Christian Duguay will take on "A Beautiful Life," Scott Winant will helm "Body Politic" and Marcos Siega has come aboard "Vampire Diaries."

"Life," from CBS Par and Katalyst, follows a group of young models living together in a co-ed residence in New York.

Veteran TV movie director Duguay most recently helmed Lifetime's "Coco Chanel."

"Politic," from CBS Par, is a look at D.C. politics through the eyes of optimistic young staffers, focusing on a young woman who moves to D.C. to work for a senator and the other eager up-and-comers she befriends.

Winant, an Emmy winner for "thirtysomething," most recently worked on HBO's "True Blood" and Showtime's "Californication."

"Diaries," from WBTV and Alloy, is based on the series of novels and centers on a tragic young heroine who is the object of passion for two vampire brothers, one good and one evil.

Siega's directing credits include "Dexter" and "Cold Case."
